Putting the emphasis on sustainability

I’ve noticed a lot of sustainability groups popping up around the country who are sick of empty rhetoric from pollies and so are taking action into their own hands.

Last week I gave a talk to a group in Emerald called EmFSus. EmFSus are calling for “residents, businesses and community groups in the Emerald district to reduce their water and energy consumption, minimise waste and increase the biodiversity; with an aim to live a low carbon or carbon neutral lifestyle."

Thinking globally and acting locally.

My challenge to EmFSus last week was to get involved in some level of political activism. Politics can be a frustrating, messy business, but it's critical that we engage with it. It doesn't matter how. Join a political party. Write letters to MPs. Hand out how to vote cards on election day. Whatever we do, we shouldn't ignore political activism. Because without it, we’re only addressing part of the problem.
